Franklin Parson Newman, 73, of Wheelersburg, passed away Wednesday, December 28th, 2016, at Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center in Huntington, WV, after a lengthy hospital stay. Frank is survived by his wife of 48 years, Sue, his son, Jeremy, his daughter-in-law, Lori, and his two granddaughters, Aliana and Myla. He is also survived by 4 brothers – Jim, Bill, Sam, and Pete and 4 sisters – Alberta, Betty, Daisy, and Sue. Frank was preceded in death by his parents, Harry Newman Sr. and Lola Belle Newman, and 3 brothers – Carl, Kenny, and John.

Frank was born on December 31st, 1942 near Athalia, Ohio, in Lawrence County. He graduated from Dawson-Bryant High School in 1960. Prior to and after graduation, Frank served our country in the United States Army Reserve and, later, in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. He married the former Ora Sue Shields on September 21, 1968, at Sugar Creek Baptist Church near Ironton, Ohio. Although skilled in several trades, with experience in various industries, Frank’s main occupation was as a forklift operator for Eaton Corporation in Marion, Ohio until an injury left him permanently disabled.

“Homer” spent countless hours volunteering as a baseball coach at Coal Grove Little League and making a positive impact on the lives of many children. An avid outdoorsman, Frank spent many years hunting and fishing with his brothers and friends. He will be remembered by neighbors in the Rock Camp area as a gifted gardener that gave away many of fruits and vegetables he grew each summer, most notably his peaches. Fantasy football and “penny ante” poker were also two of his favorite past times. Frank often frequented local flea markets and enjoyed buying, selling, and interacting with people. Later on, “Pappaw” was the #1 fan at Ali’s basketball and Myla’s T-Ball games at South Webster supporting the teams with his enthusiasm.
Graveside services will be held Friday, December 30th, at 1:00 pm at Leatherwood Cemetery near Rock Camp, Ohio with arrangements being handled by Slack and Wallace Funeral Home, South Point, Ohio.
